Perlite
about perlite
The starting product for perlite is volcanic obsidian. The glassy perlite was formed through numerous weathering and transformation processes. This material is used in industry as an aggregate in the construction industry, as an insulating material, as an admixture for paints and even for special toothpastes.
Only expanded perlite is used in the hobby and professional gardening sector. The rock is heated to up to 1000 °C in industrial plants, which can increase its volume up to twentyfold. Expanded perlite is white in colour and has a low density.
how to use perlite
In horticulture, perlite is used to improve the soil for mineral growing media. It stores water, prevents soil compaction and increases aeration. Due to its structure, it can help prevent over-fertilisation.
It promotes root growth and is mixed into substrates or soils in quantities of 5-20% (according to the Fertiliser Ordinance, perlite is a soil additive).
